Thanks to everyone who came out µFD in July! It was fantastic…in fact, so fantastic that we’ve outgrown the usual spot at Rancho Potrero. There were 14 stations operating, and over 50 people came by! CRPD has said we need permits to hold the event there in the future. This is certainly possible, but misses the point-we filled the entire parking lot, making it unusable for other park visitors. We want to promote amateur radio, not make people go home because “those hams” made trail access difficult.
So where do we go now? I’m working on several locations, including those that might require paid reservations or even an insurance policy. I’ll give news about that as things develop. For August, we’ll meet at a park we’ve used before where even at our largest we won’t have any impact on other park users. Back at Freedom Park by the Camarillo Airport on Sunday the 27th from 1100-1500 as usual.
We met there over the winter and had a great turnout in spite of the rain and snow on the mountains, and it’s an excellent site for radio. This time, I’m asking that no one set up in the parking lot itself, especially tents/chairs/etc. We’ll be in the grass are along the south side of the parking lot. In the first row of parking along the south edge, people can back in to operate from their tailgates. The rest of us should unload and repark a row or two further into the lot.
I was there about noon this last Sunday, and the park was deserted. There were a dozen or so people using the RC car tracks, so leave the spaces on the west side of the lot for them. Baseball season starts in September, so this site will probably be off the menu then.

Be sure to check out the Gallery for photos…thanks, KN6QQW!
