μField Day June 17

ARRL Field Day is approaching, June 24th. So who would be crazy enough to to that TWICE in a month? Yeah, that’s right. June 17th at Rancho Potrero, 11:00am to 3:00 pm as usual.

If you’re participating at any of Ventura County’s three FD sites, and you haven’t fired up your mobile HF radio since LAST year…you really ought to come to µFD and make sure you remember how to operate it, right? At least blow the dust off. It will also be a good chance to see that mobile ops can be extremely casual, as opposed to what we all usually do on big FD.

One of the main reasons I started this was noticing that I was going out and having fun mobile often using regular shack-style gear, nothing fancy or designed for mobile use, and a lot of hams were possibly missing out on some fun due to the idea that mobile ops takes special gear and a lot of prep. This will be our 21st µFD, and I think the word is out-you can have a lot of fun without a lot of effort.

A week later VCARC will be at Oxnard college, VCARS and SSARC will be at the Reagan Library, and CVARC and CSUCIARC will be at Lake Sherwood. I hope that everyone who isn’t a participant with any of the club sites still drops by one (if not all three) sites to look around, or even get on the air. There will be people happy to help get ANYONE on, licensed or not.

On maps it’s the “Rancho Potrero West Entrance” from 11:00 to 3:00pm. This is next to the horse rental/boarding facility on Potrero Road in Dos Vientos, up the hill from Cal State Channel Islands. The GPS location is 34.155935, -118.982024. If you’re familiar with what3words.com, it’s barbershop.state.ribbing. Bring your own refreshments. There are restrooms at the site, but no electricity-bring those batteries. Be there!
